Time was, when a Scarsdale child needed a trim or styling, parents would often head over to the Larchmont franchise of Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids. There, a cut didn’t cue a fit of crying: Children were too distracted by the festive atmosphere to freak about the pair of clippers headed towards their delicate locks.

The bad news: The Larchmont parlor is long gone. But the good—even great—news is that we now have a Sharkey’s right in the ’Dale, the one and only in Westchester. “It’s been great,” said franchise owner Erin McKenna, who also operates a Rhode-Island based location and soon will open one in Connecticut as well. “We’re meeting the community and getting out there. Things are going really well so far.”

“So far” means since December 7th, when the doors first opened and kiddies began to settle into the 11 styling station seats, most styled as sporty or official cars. There’s even pastel-hued roadster. (Much as the thought of squeezing into a pint-size police car may appeal to you, Sharkey’s is geared towards kids ages 0 to 14 years.)

Awesome seating isn’t the only draw to kids. “Every single haircut comes with a manicure, and then we give a balloon, tattoo, and lollipop as well,” McKenna said. Boys are welcome to get a mani too, if they like, just like men sometimes do at grown-up nail salons. The littlest clients—those receiving their first haircut—go home with a certificate, a photo, and a lock of their hair as a keepsake.

Recreational vehicles The styling stations’ seats are designed to amp up the fun.

All kids, though, appreciate the atmosphere and amenities. “Every station has a TV. For the younger kids, it’s more like a Disney Plus or YouTube, or their favorite shows. We also have tablets. And then for the older kids, the other four stations are Xboxes,” McKenna explained. Girls can opt for a day of beauty, which comes with a hairstyle and makeup.

Already, the store has attracted a trendy crowd. “A lot of the influencers have come out,” McKenna said. “Everybody that comes in seems really happy and we're also really great with special-needs kids. We try to give them different toys or discuss with them with what's going on, and we are very patient with them. So that's another thing that we really try to strive to achieve, that every kid gets a great experience while here.

Kids are only young and innocent once,” McKenna said. “I think it's important for them to come in and have smiling faces and have a great time while they're getting their hair cut.”
