Learn what makes older women some of literature’s leading ladies.

A certain age but certainly enjoying it.

Older Women in Contemporary Literature: Voices of Wit, Wisdom, Strength, and Sass

This course will focus on the depiction of older women in contemporary literature, with a spotlight on those who celebrate life; who look at their age straight in the face and not only accept who they are, but like what they see. In class, the instructor and teacher will those female characters who have grown wise, remain smart-alecky, and see age as just a number, not an obstacle. The course will examine the following novels, whose protagonists refuse to go gently into that good night: Linda Olsson’s Astrid and Veronika (2007), Kent Haruf’s Our Souls at Night (2015), and Julia Alvarez’s Afterlife (2020).

3 sessions, starting Monday, Jan. 27th.
