Wandering dogs, abandoned cars and strangers at the door
Abandoned vehicles
On July 29, a Madison Road resident reported a white pickup truck parked in front of their home for multiple days. It was a 2008 Chevy Silverado with no license plates. The cab was locked but the glove box inside was open, its contents spilling out. Using information glimpsed through the window, the officer tracked down the company that owns the truck. An employee of that company, located in a distant time zone on a 24/7 emergency line, was advised of the truck’s location. They said someone would call the officer back in half an hour, but no one did. Tow was requested by the officer and the truck was impounded.
On Aug. 1, police went to Freightway for a report of a trailer bearing PA plates parked in a lot with a flat tire. It had been there for months. Tow was requested and the trailer was hauled to impound.
Gas and grease
A report of an inside odor of gas brought firefighters to a restaurant on Popham Road on July 29. Gas was discovered leaking from cooking equipment into an adjacent framing shop. Valves were shut off and ventilation procedures set in action. Heavy cooking grease was caked on the hood system, as well as on electric rice cookers powered by extension cords. The building department was contacted to document the scene. Firefighters requested Con Ed to lock out the gas meter to the establishment due to numerous violations.
Stranger at the door
On July 29, a Bradford Road resident requested police come and check out her home due to recent events in her neighborhood. She told police a stranger knocked on her door late at night the week before. An officer checked her home's exterior and walked around her property. All appeared in order.
Wobbling in the street
A caller on July 30 reported a skinny man in jeans and a baggy T-shirt was wobbling in the intersection of Wayside Lane and Carstensen Road. Police looked for the man but he was gone.
You’re not welcome
A person who had been trespassed from the library on Olmsted Road was reported inside the building by staff July 30. Police found them inside, seated. The person was informed they couldn’t be there and got up and left.
Who’s that lurking by my house?
Suspicious activity was reported July 31 on East Taunton Road. The caller stated a car with tinted windows was parked outside his house. He found this concerning. Patrol drove by the caller’s house and around their neighborhood but couldn’t find the car.
On July 31, a caller on Franklin Road reported a man driving up and down their street in a white four-door car taking pictures. The caller described him as of medium build and wearing orange Crocs. Police couldn’t find anyone of that description.
Was the light red or green?
Police went to the scene of a two-car collision July 31 at the intersection of Weaver Street and Quaker Ridge Road. On arrival they spoke with a New Rochelle police officer who had arrived on scene first. One driver said the light was green and he moved forward, colliding with the other car. The driver of the second car and their passenger said the light was red. Nobody went to the hospital. Police facilitated an orderly exchange of information. Neither car was towed.
Asking for money
A caller July 31 reported two people asking for money at the intersection of Post Road and Crane Road. Police couldn't find them.
Please check on my son
A caller on Hutchinson Avenue July 31 called the police to say they believed their son was under the influence of an unknown substance as he was acting strangely. An officer went to the residence and spoke to the son who seemed fine. No alarming behavior was observed.
Wandering dog
On Aug. 1, a caller on Walworth Avenue said they found a dog on their property. Patrol went to the residence where they found the dog in the backyard. It was wearing tags registered to Home Again services and patrol made contact with the corporation, which provided the correct contact for the owner. Dog and owner were soon reunited.
More concerns about parked cars
Suspicious activity was reported Aug. 1 on Wildwood Road. A caller said that an unknown vehicle was parked for a long time outside a construction site across the street from the caller’s home. The caller said it looked like the car was occupied by more than one person. Police drove by and saw the car was parked but its headlights and taillights were on. No one appeared to be inside the car. The construction site was checked and all appeared in good order.
Lock it up
While patrolling Cornell Street late at night Aug. 1, an officer noticed someone’s garage doors were wide open. The homeowner was notified so they could shut and lock the doors.
Hey, can I use your phone?
A caller Aug. 2 reported that while walking his dog on Palmer Avenue, he was approached by a man who asked to use his phone. He denied the request and the man walked away. Police looked for the man without result.
Frenchie on the loose
