What’s going on at DeCicco’s?

The neighborhood’s go-to grocery store isn’t closing, management insists.

An empty feeling  Shelves where grapes and berries would be are mostly bare at the moment.

For several months, local Facebook groups and Reddit threads have been speculating on the fate of Scarsdale’s DeCicco Family Market. “Are they getting ready to close? [The] past two times I’ve been there, the shelves have been getting increasingly empty,” one Redditor asked. “Practically speaking, I cannot feed myself if they close,” someone worriedly replied. Commented another user, “It is walkable and it is an anchor in a town center otherwise filled with restaurants, salons, and [a] glut [of] prissy boutique stores.” [Editor’s note: We like all the aforementioned very much.]

Recent visitors found scant reassurance that it’s business as normal at the store. The week before last, there was no milk in the refrigerated aisles, leading some to head for 7-Eleven instead. On Tuesday, the produce section was half-full at best, and staples such as baked beans were sold out. When asked if closure is imminent, a cashier who requested anonymity said, “We are not closing now. We are going through hard times and need support, but we are trying to stay open. Believe us, we want us to remain in the community as much as you do.”

A manager, who requested their name not be used, seemed unperturbed. “Oh no, we’re not closing,” he insisted. “We’re going through some things, but we expect them to settle down.” When asked what sorts of things might be causing the dwindling supplies of merchandise, they replied, “distributors and some things,” but declined to elaborate. A voicemail left for the chain’s corporate office has so far gone unanswered.
