Going to the dogs

Greenburgh gave residents’ best friends a chance to take a dip.

BY DEBORAH SKOLNIK

On Sunday, September 8th, a boisterous crowd thronged the Anthony F. Veteran Town Pool in Greenburgh. Yet not a single one of these guests fretted over their hairy legs or the size of their tail end. Why should they have? They were dogs, and the occasion was “Dog Days of Summer,” when residents who paid a nominal fee could take man’s (and everyone else’s) best friend for a dip in the pool.

The event, which ran from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., offered three shifts to choose among, and attracted some 150 dog owners in all. No pooches were allowed if they acted aggressively. (Weird thought: Dogs playing chicken.) Proceeds were donated to Friends of the East Rumbrook Dog Park, a nonprofit that helps the Town of Greenburgh maintain a leash-free dog park.
